Natural gas has been produced in New York and Pennsylvania for nearly a century. Easily accessible reserves have been found in sand, sandstone and limestone layers at depths up to three or four thousand feet. Most of these reserves are low productivity, and some are only marginally economic.
Several years ago, geologists identified the very deep underground Trenton- Black River formation over two miles below the surface that had the possibility of becoming a considerable reserve. Drilling technology has only recently been applied that can access these 10,000- to 12,000- foot-deep pockets and do it economically. At the time, the increased value of natural gas made these wells more financially attractive.
In the last couple of years, the Marcellus Shale has become a high priority for exploration and drilling companies due to advances in technology and those same high natural gas prices that made the shale economical to pursue. While the current state of the economy and natural gas prices have slowed activity for some companies, Talisman Energy USA is committed to developing the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania and plans on an extremely active drilling schedule for years to come.
The Trenton/Black River and Marcellus Shale rock formations lie beneath much of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Talisman Energy USA's core operating area is in the Southern Tier of New York State and the Northern Tier of PA. We have dozens of productive wells in Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Tioga counties in NY and Bradford and Tioga counties in PA.
