Talisman Energy USA takes very seriously our individual and corporate responsibility to the environment. We strive to abide by State and Federal environmental protection regulations. Whether we are constructing a new facility, operating a well, or restoring a site, we strictly follow proven practices that minimize our impact on the environment.

Protecting Our Groundwater Aquifers

TEUSA takes groundwater protection very seriously, as evidenced by our excellent environmental protection track record. To read more about these protective measures, view our Groundwater Protection page.

TEUSA Goes to Bat – For a Bat!

Can a creature that weighs less than eight grams stop a three-ton backhoe?  At Talisman Energy USA, the answer is an emphatic "Yes!"

The Northern Myotis bat is a "species of concern" in Pennsylvania, so its habitat is protected in Tioga County, where TEUSA is ramping up activity in the unconventional Marcellus Shale gas play.  The presence of this bat has caused us to take precautionary environmental protection measures while building a pipeline to a compressor station there.

Project Planning

Seismic surveys, drilling, and construction projects are routinely supported by an appropriate level of environmental planning to identify environmental risks and implement strategies to minimize potential impacts. This may involve baseline environmental studies, formal or informal environmental impact assessments, and attendant protection plans, depending on the local environmental setting and sensitivities. Public consultation is a key element in project planning.

Construction Practices

Areas to be cleared or otherwise disturbed are kept as small as safely possible. Topsoil is retained for use in (eventual) site reclamation, and runoff and erosion are properly controlled. Sensitive environmental features are avoided through routing and schedule adjustments, and the use of directional drilling techniques, and major stream crossings for pipelines may be drilled or bored. Environmental inspectors monitor and guide work in all locations.

Environmental Permits

We diligently obtain environmental operating permits, licenses, and other consents required by local, state and federal regulation. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and the New York State Public Service Commission (NYS PSC) as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) have permitting procedures that control most aspects of our operations. Terms and conditions are integrated into project and annual operating plans.

Wellsite Reclamation

We safely decommission and restore our inactive wells and facilities, ensuring appropriate reclamation of the land as part of this process.

Safety and Response:

A 24-hour 800-number (800-530-5392) is posted on all of our facilities. All of our above-ground facilities and all of our pipelines are inspected on a regular basis.
