Description:

Capital & Joint Operations Accountant is responsible for assisting in the capital approval and assurance reporting processes, ensuring proper treatment of capital vs. operating costs, ensuring capital accruals are accurate and joint interest billings are appropriate. This position will work closely with the Supervisor, Capital & Joint Operations to make decisions relating to group processes. The successful candidate will become the daily transaction expert on the team, help influence team decisions and work with other functional groups regarding capital expenditure accounting, authority levels and the financial administration of joint operating agreements. The Senior Capital & Joint Operations Accountant will assist in developing standard operating procedures for the Capital & Joint Operations Team as well as the training and development of team members. The ability to successfully handle multiple responsibilities, set priorities and respond positively to demanding situations is essential to this position.
Deliverables for this role include:
 
  • Assist in the development of standard operating procedures for all functions of the Capital Team. Develop flowcharts for procedures as necessary.
  • Evolving and maintaining appropriate procedures for handling key financial transactions such as non-depleted capital, WIP analysis, write down of assets, working interest set-up and billing on operated and non-operated activities.
  • Understand the steps in the life cycle of an Authorization For Expenditure (AFE) and ensure the proper controls are followed in each step.
  • Ensure adherence to financial authority approval limits.
  • Ensure the appropriate internal and SOX controls are adhered to and recommend updates as needed.
  • Monthly reporting on capital expenditures, over-expenditures, accruals and capital assurance.
  • Develop reports to trend and analyze data on a monthly basis to ensure reasonableness of billing activity.
  • Provide recommendations to Supervisor, Capital & Joint Operations for improvement in processes to enable efficient means of accomplishing tasks.
  • Assist team to ensure proper billing and collection from partners in accordance with COPAS model forms and interpretations.
  • Assist in the development and training of team members, answer team member questions, provide feedback to the team and assist in coaching the team as needed.
  • Liaison with credit to identify potential risks regarding credit and collections from partners.
  • On time and accurate joint operations billings & collections as well as tracking of miscellaneous receivables.
  • Liaison with other functional groups with a goal of continuous improvement in business processes and reporting.
  • Perform special and ad hoc projects and other job related duties as necessary.

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, time management, system skills and problem solving skills are required.
Qualifications:

  • 5+ years progressive accounting experience.
  • Team lead or coaching experience is a plus.
  • Experience in writing extensive documentation such as standard operating procedures
  • Oil and gas experience is a plus.
  • BS in Accounting is required
  • Working knowledge of Excel, Word, Access 2003, Visio
